Race 8 - Stock Semi-Pro IV Results for September 17th, 2008
Another exciting SSP4 race, as jjnscrmn whips the 'Monster' and brings his Miller Light Chevrolet Impala SS to a confetti-laced Victory Lane!
Here we are in our 8th race in SSP4, and the excitement keeps coming. Lots of interesting finishes this season. Everyone has vastly improved in our racing, with some surprising results. Team PSI has consistently brought a first place finisher to Victory Lane. NASA Motorsports has been in a few close ones. Individual drivers have also brought some out-of-your-seats situations.
The PSI stranglehold came to a halt today, with JJ giving NASA Motorsports a much deserved win.
The Track - Dover International Speedway. Number of drivers - 9. The tire wear for our division has been changed to 1x, and with that comes a change in strategy as well.
Andy got the pole. Almost half the field didn't qualify. Looked like alot of drivers didn't want to be up there in the fray for the beginning of the race.
Green Flag! Andy led the way as all the drivers got going for 160 Monster Mile laps. JJ came on strong early and by lap 3 he had made the pass for 1st, as Dave hung right behind and looked on. Dusty and Chuck looked to hang back for a bit, while Shriner charged up there just as fast as his wheels could carry him. Scott was struggling and fought to keep up.
By lap 9, worn tires were starting to see an effect. JJ started falling back as Andy reclaimed 1st. Dave was a little wobbly and turned into the wall then did some apron time but he held it together. Phil fell back to last place after a few encounters with the wall. Shriner got some lead laps when Andy and Mike decided to pit.
Our first caution came out on lap 40 when Scott got loose on the backstraight and played some wall pinball. This created some engine and minor left front suspension problems for him. Rather than drag his car to the pits, Scott just called the tow truck, Phil just barely squeezed by. See screenshot. That is something no one wants to see right in front of them, lol. Almost half the field was a lap down, putting JJ back on top after pitting was done. Scott repaired some damage and got back out there.
Shriner got EOLL but in the process of slowing down, Phil passed him and got a penalty. Phil would have to come back in during the green to serve a 1 second stop and go.
Lap 46 Green Flag! JJ put the pedal to the metal and left inside lapper Andy in his wake. Phil came in to serve his penalty and got back out, however he also got 4 tires which put him significantly behind. I don't think he meant to do that.
Lap 76 Chuck shifted into 3rd gear while going into Turn 1. He was going too fast for 3rd gear and his rear came around due to the sudden slow speed and he spun. He hit the wall and rested on the apron before he got going again. No yellow came out. He then got loose coming out of Turn 4 and blew his right front tire. He went around the track and pitted, getting 4 fresh tires and repairing damage before getting back out. He was having trouble controlling it after that and finally on lap 88 he parked it for the day.
Dusty's right front tire exploded as he was coming out of Turn 2 on lap 96. He went straight for the wall but didn't spin and dragged himself to pits for some tires. No caution.
Shriner took the lead as another round of green flag pit stops occurred. At one point, Mike was on JJ's rear bumper, when JJ swerved to the left, and there was Dusty in Mike's window. Mike had to put on the brakes real quick to avoid hitting Dusty
Caution came out on Lap 149 when Scott's engine couldn't take it anymore and blew up. Dark smoke and a spin had him calling the tow truck and calling it a day. Reason for retirement was ignition. Pitting for all.
Less than 10 laps to go and it looks like we have a shootout! Only 4 cars were on the lead lap, in the following order: JJ, Shriner, Mike, and Dave, while lappers Dusty, Andy, and Phil looked on..
Lap 155, Green Flag, Green Flag! It's a 5 lap shootout. JJ hits the gas and pulls away. Shriner in the meantime, started in too low a gear, got loose, and fought control while everyone behind got slowed down. Mike couldn't avoid him and gave him a helpful nudge to give him the fullbody spin he was so desperately trying to achieve, lol. No caution. As he veered to the inside, we all got back on the gas but to no avail. Mike tried like heck to catch up but JJ held on and the checkered flag was all his.
Great job JJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NASA Motorsports breaks the PSI streak as the former season champion gets a virtual SSP4 trophy!
